Natural Links

Joe - admin 21 Nov 2007 | : , , ,

About a couple of months ago, Google launched a feature in their webmaster tools wherein you can report other websites who are buying and selling links. This is a movement to stop buying links and maintaining the links natural. Question is, how do you make it look that your links are all natural? First is that your links should come from different websites with different IP’s. A link from http://hotjobs.yahoo.com/careers-600461-Collins_College and another subdomains or subpages from the same root domain to a single website is weighted less. Another good example are blogs that are free hosted in Google’s Blogger and WordPress.

Links should of course not be labeled as sponsored or anything that is similar. This will ring the alarm of your competitors and trigger them to report you to Google. Spread your links across forums, information websites, link directories and blogs. Also, try to build your links slowly in a consistent manner. A new website getting thousands of links in one day is not natural at all. It’s either the webmaster of the said website is using spam bots to get links that quick or he could be using money to buy links.

Links on Educational Websites

There are different link building techniques and myths that SEO people use and believe in. One of these is the assumption that educational websites, particularly websites that have .edu domains, are weighted more by Google. A good example of an educational website with a .edu domain extention is http://www.gibbsmelville.edu/programs.asp. Though this is believed by many, there are no solid proofs to support this belief. As far as I know, even Google representative Matt Cutts did not confirm that educational websites have greater weight or are better votes for optimizing your website on their search engine.

Getting links should be relevant as possible. An educational blog getting a link from another educational blog means getting a quality link. On the other hand, a real estate or a sports website getting a link from an educational site is not relevant enough and thus gives links with less weight. Relevance should be your main concern in getting quality links. This will let your website increase its rankings on targeted keywords. This will of course also depend on the anchor texts that you use on getting your links.

Though there is no solid proof about links on .edu websites, I would still try some case studies in the near future. Besides, you’ll never know when Google is telling you the truth or just tells you what you need to believe in.

More Impressions and Ads, Less Earnings

Joe - admin 19 Nov 2007 | : , ,

One of my websites is getting decent traffic and revenue from adsense. Earning an average of $16 per day is already a bonus for me since having my own websites and blogs is just a part time job. I recently tried several social bookmarking sites like stumble upon and digg and as expected, my traffic stats went up. However, I noticed that with the same number of clicks, from almost the same sources of traffic and the same location of visitors, my adsense went down to $7 per day. I have already heard rumors about adsense earnings dropping down from my SEO Exeter friends and other online communities. According to them, and what I experienced just confirms it, that having more ads in a websites pages and decreases the over all adsense earnings.

This means that if your website’s traffic increases but the number of ad clicks it receives does not, you can expect lower adsense earnings. A page having three ad units will generate three page impressions. By minimizing the ads placed in your website’s pages, you will increase the ratio of you clicks to page views. Having more ads in your website does not mean you are increasing the possibility of ad clicks. Only a good ad placement does that. Anyway, this is purely based on my observation and experience.
